Carbonaceous Chondrite CV3

a stony meteorite of an extremely rare class. The sub-type letter V in CV3 stands for the first named meteorite in this class, the VIGARANO CV3, which fell 1910, January 22 (11h30hrs) in Italy. Carbonaceous Chondrites contain a high part of carbon (up to 3%), water and organic substances like amino acids, many large chondrules and CAI's ( Calcium- Aluminium-Inclusions). CV Chondrites have hardly been altered by thermal processes, as the have not been exposed to high temeratures.

In the NWA 4685 you find a very beautiful (S2) (W2) CV Chondrite, showing veri nice and distingt chondrules and CAI's.

The Total Known Weight (TKW) is 1,244g and consists of two larger individuals, 660.0g and 155.2g, and 48 smaller individuals and fragments, most of them containing good fusion crust.

This is a very nice and thin cut slice with partial fusion crust at the rim, showing beautiful chondrules and small CAI's in a dark matrix. Larger CAI's are quite common in this meteorite.
