NWA 5436

Name: NWA 5436CV3 (prov.)
Location: Tindouf Basin, Sahara Desert
Country: ALGERIA
carbonaceous Chondrite CV3, W4
Total Known Weight: 1,772 g

This Carbonaceous Chondrite CV3 is a stony meteorite of an extremely rare class. The sub-type letter V in CV3 stands for the first named meteorite in this class, the VIGARANO CV3, which fell 1910, January 22 (11h30hrs) in Italy. Carbonaceous Chondrites contain a high part of carbon (up to 3%), water and organic substances like amino acids, many large chondrules and CAI's ( Calcium- Aluminium-Inclusions). CV Chondrites have hardly been altered by thermal processes, as the have not been exposed to high temeratures.

In the NWA 5436 you find a very beautiful W4 CV Chondrite, showing very nice and distingt chondrules and CAI's.

The Total Known Weight (TKW) is 1,772g and consists of three individuals, 820.0g (Main Mass), 771.6g and 180.4g.

Three Meteorire fragments have been found by Nomads in the Tindouf Basin of the Sahara Desert in Algeria, totalling a weight of 1,772g. This lot has been purchased in Erfoud in 2008 by Norbert Kammel of ROCKS ON FIRE and sent for Classification to the Bathurst Observatory Research Facility in New South Wales, Australia. The analysis confirmed a carbonaceous Chondrite Type CV3, Weathering grade of 4. The data has been submitted to the Nomenclature Committee for publication in the Meteorite Bulletin and the provisional name North West Africa 5436 (prov.) has been assigned to it. NWA 5436 shows very nice amboid Chondrules and interesting CAI's (Calcium Aluminium Inclusions).

A Specimen not to be missed in any Meteorite Collection.
